Sandi Glowe is a 23 year-old songwriter and guitarist from Rome, based in Milan and Manchester, UK (when creating and studying music). Her classical background and love for psychology, philosophy and art has gone on to define her poetic and metaphoric style of writing, along with her insightful guitar melodies and a more recent electro-synth influence.
INTERVIEW
Name, where are you from?
Alessandra - Stage name: Sandi Glowe based in Milan and sometimes Manchester, UK.
Describe your style in three words? Meditative, dark and melancholic.
If your music was a soundtrack, for which movie would that be?
Probably a 2020s version of Donnie Darko or a psychologically introspective Netflix series, maybe based on Manchester’s nightlife, that would be a dream!
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Nostalgically and emotionally, Damon Albarn at the Royal Albert Hall in 2014: because of the excitement of travelling to London while still attending High School in Italy, the beauty of the venue, the strong emotions in being in the front row; in terms of gig quality instead I would pick David Byrne (Talking Heads) at the Manchester Arena in 2018: the choreography, the concepts expressed through the scenography and the detached drum kit carried around by the musicians alongside the other instruments, and the great music of course. 10/10!
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Since I was a child I have always been in love with the Punk / Goth aesthetic but the sort of environment I lived in made it difficult for me to start dressing that way or hanging out with people that were into that style. In general I am more the kind of person that becomes obsessed with one specific artist rather than a whole sub-genre or sub-culture, and if you look at these artists, they are usually the type of people that have a very unique style and can’t be really classified either, like Kate Bush for example. Probably the only real subculture I have been a part of was during my teenage years when I was hanging out with the Roman underground scene and I was rapping in Italian and making graffiti art.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Tame Impala and Avril Lavigne
An underrated heroine or hero in music you admire?
Miley Cyrus
Have you experienced sexism when working with other musicians? How can we help each other to educate people in order to get a more equal music industry?
Sexism can be really subtle and sooner or later every woman will make some some kind of experience of it, not just in music but in everyday life unfortunately. I think that people should always be mindful (and learn from books/social media/ their friends) of what is appropriate to say/do, and learn what the stereotypes that society associates with women are, and just be respectful in general. On the other hand, we should never give up on our ideas, and be more assertive and not allow other people letting us down. Let's all support each other and stop competing, let's all respect each other and stop thinking that one is better than the other.
Of all the venues in history, which is your “dream venue” to play?
Royal Albert Hall, or play in the mountains like Sigur Ros did
Favorite music video ever?
It's hard to pick one but I LOVE watching Gus Dapperton music videos.
