Three friends, all working musicians, got together to jam in a basement one day in 2018 with no plans of starting a band whatsoever. The burst of energy that grabbed ahold of them the second they turned their amps up however left them no choice. That’s how Stockholm trio AWAZE was formed.
INTERVIEW
Name, where are you from?
AWAZE - Simon Zion, Jonna Löfgren and Olov Domeij. Based in Stockholm, Sweden.
Describe your style in three words? Wild, colourful, organic
If your music was a soundtrack, for which movie would that be?
Trainspotting
What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to?
Olov: 15 years old front row at the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Stadium Arcadium tour) was a pretty life-altering experience
Which subcultures have influenced you?
Well it’s all a bit of a melting pot, but I can name a few that directly influence our music. The late 60s psychedelic stuff like the Doors, Jimi Hendrix and late Beatles. We love that stuff and it’s such a goldmine when it comes to songwriting and musicianship. Early 70s funk like the Meters, Funkadelic and Sly and the Family Stone (listening to them as I write this, gets my mindjuices flowing). The 90s alt rock scene is dear to our hearts of course as it’s what we grew up with. I’m talking Chili peppers, RATM, White Stripes and all the usual suspects. Also Jonna played in Glasvegas for ten years so the UK Indie scene is of course deep in our system.
If you could be on the line up with any two bands in history?
Well I gotta say Woodstock.. Right in between Mountain and Sly and the Family Stone.
An underrated heroine or hero in music you admire?
I feel like Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes will eventually be remembered as one of the great geniuses of our time
Of all the venues in history, which is your “dream venue” to play?
I guess the ”correct” answer is the Hollywood Bowl or Madison Square Gardens but we don’t really make stadium rock music. We’d rather play ALL the rock clubs and have that close sweaty vibrant relationship with our audience. Ask us again in a few years, we’ll probably say our music is perfect for stadiums ;)
Favorite label?
We don’t have a favourite label. We’re doing this all on our own and if we ever sign with a label they’ll have to give us an insanely good deal.
Favorite music video ever?
Miike Snow - Genghis Khan. Will put a smile on any face.
